De la photographie, l’artiste afro-américaine Ayana V. Jackson, née en 1977 dans le New Jersey, a un usage historique et politique. Depuis ses débuts, elle ressuscite ou invente des figures féminines noires porteuses de récits et de charges symboliques.
Inventions : ses noires naïades fantastiques de la série From the Deep : In the Wake of Drexciya, ainsi intitulée du nom du duo techno et électro de Detroit (Michigan) qui a créé cette mythologie nouvelle. Ces créatures vivraient dans les profondeurs de l’Atlantique, filles d’Africaines enceintes jetées par-dessus bord par les négriers de la traite transatlantique – ce qui s’est produit en effet maintes fois. Ayana Jackson en fixe les portraits imaginaires. Ils ont les dimensions et la majesté d’effigies sacrées et elle y introduit des allusions aux arts et aux cosmogonies propres aux populations de la côte occidentale de l’Afrique qui furent les victimes de la traite.
