Robert Badinter est entré au Panthéon le 9 octobre, quarante-quatre ans après la promulgation de la loi d’abolition de la peine de mort, le 9 octobre 1981, dont il fut l’auteur.
La cérémonie au Panthéon a été marquée par la reprise de L’Assassin assassiné par Julien Clerc mais aussi par la lecture de textes de Robert Badinter et de Victor Hugo, choisis par son épouse, Elisabeth.
Le président de la République, Emmanuel Macron, a également prononcé un discours lors duquel il est longuement revenu sur les combats de Robert Badinter : « Ses combats sont ceux qui traversent les siècles et portent nos idéaux comme la définition véritable de ce que nous sommes. »
