Avec la mort de Nicola Pietrangeli, le sport transalpin pleure un des plus grands champions que le pays ait connus. Le joueur a incarné l’Italie, tant pour son palmarès que par son style, son charme et le raffinement de son jeu. « Il fut le seul (…) au cours de cette quinzaine à faire montre d’un peu d’esprit, et de subtilité », saluait Le Monde en 1959, après son premier sacre sur l’ocre de Roland-Garros, le qualifiant de « seul joueur de classe » du tournoi du Grand Chelem parisien.
