« C’est le prix de notre dignité. » C’est ainsi qu’a réagi l’Ukrainien Vladyslav Heraskevytch, skeletoneur qui devait faire son entrée dans la compétition aux Jeux olympiques de Milan-Cortina, à la décision du Comité international olympique (CIO) de l’exclure de la compétition. Il devait participer pour la troisième fois de sa carrière aux Jeux olympiques (JO).
La raison de sa disqualification : le port d’un casque honorant plusieurs coéquipiers tués en raison du conflit avec la Russie. Dans un communiqué, le comité olympique écrit que le skeletonneur a refusé « d’accepter les règles du CIO en matière d’expression des athlètes ».
Lors des Jeux de Pékin, en 2022, quelques jours avant le début de l’invasion à grande échelle de l’Ukraine par la Russie, Vladyslav Heraskevytch avait brandi une pancarte sur laquelle était inscrite la mention « Pas de guerre en Ukraine ».
