Plus de vingt personnes ont été tuées dans un séisme de magnitude 6,3 qui a frappé le nord de l’Afghanistan pendant la nuit du dimanche 2 au lundi 3 novembre. Le tremblement de terre s’est produit peu avant 21 h 30 (heure à Paris) dans la province de Samangan, près de la ville de Kholm. A Mazar-e Charif, grande ville du nord du pays, dans la province de Balkh, la mosquée bleue, joyau du XVe siècle en faïences éclatantes, a été endommagée.
Le pays est régulièrement frappé par les séismes. A la fin du mois d’août, un tremblement de terre de magnitude 6 avait frappé les provinces orientales de Kounar, Laghman et Nangarhar, faisant plus de 2 200 morts et 4 000 blessés.
